Down here in San Diego, I don't know that I've ever seen anyone enter the surf with their reg in their mouth, their fins on or their BC empty, and awfully few with their masks on.
Personally, I have my fins in my left hand, my BC full, my mask around my neck... walk out until chest-deep, then float on my back, pull my fins on, and get past any remaining surf as fast as I can. If the surf is big, then I may hold my reg in my right hand just in case...
