Okay, like Ms. Blue Cow, I'm usually running, fins in hand to get the hell out there before the next set comes in. If I see I'm about to be caught by a small (maybe waist high) wave I brace for it. I put my right foot forward and lean into the wave with my left foot planted firmly behind me. I usually don't keep much air in my BC when entering that way the wave won't lift me off the bottom.

Some waves you can go under, but if your BC is too full it can cause you to be grabbed by the wave a pulled further back into the break zone, making harder to get past the next one that's coming.
