If I got slammed like that in the surf, I would just go back onto my regulator, purge it, claw for the bottom, and crawl out.

There wouldnt be time to put the spare mask on. Getting slammed by the surf again would be the main problem.

My favorite exits for dealing with slamming surf is to go completely negative by dumping all the air in my B/C and suit, and crawl out underwater along the bottom. After the surf receeds past you, then just crawl faster! The next wave breaking wont slam down onto you then, and the surf bushing you up the beach is a free ride!
