Now to the main question - if your buddy could barely handle such mild conditions, doesn't that instead suggest that his checkouts should have been on the beach, rather than calm waters?
Or more than anything, haven't we just established that night diving is a bit harder, especially for a OW student's 5th dive? PADI would suggest one needs to take AOW to be ready for it. I myself think a competent buddy can do just fine, but I wouldn't do it as my first dive with him, or his first dive away from an instructor.
