Based on 10 years of data collected by the Catalina Conservancy Divers, the average water temperature in January is 59 degrees. There isn't too much of a temperature gradient in the winter months, so what you experience on the surface is pretty much what you get at depth.
Catalina, and any of the other Channel Islands, has beautiful diving. Enjoy!
