I heard they're asian. Don't know where I've heard it from. I listen to too many rumors & heresay and am probably too ready to believe these things. A hundred years is not too much though, compared to how long ships have been comming to california (500 yrs+). I may have heard it from urchin divers or fishermen while hanging around Redondo Harbor. I mean the little bright purple ones, Not the big dark ones.
