I think that over time the DIR folks have promoted a desensitization so effectively that they forget what they did. I think they have forgotten how much nastiness they have put into the diving community and now they don't even notice it. Whatever they may occasionally claim, their name is meant as a put down of all non-DIR divers. Their rule #1 is not to dive with strokes (anyone not DIR), meaning they have a special stock insult for all other divers. I have been repeatedly told that since I am not DIR, I am an ignorant stroke that knows nothing about diving and is just waiting to die, regardless of my 32 years of challenging diving experience. I think I understand them well, even if they have forgotten. Now if anyone thinks that what I have just posted is incorrect or a lie, please clarify where I'm mistaken.
