I would assume that DFG would treat the situation the same way if you had a lobster tail and a carapice separated but together. The fact that they are separated does not mean that they are from the same animal. I would assume that a DFG warden will ticket if there is any reason for doubt. And the only way to eliminate doubt is leave the animal intact.

As far as self defense is concerned, I would suggest you do the same thing that the grocery stores do with Maine lobsters - close the claws with a device so that they cannot pinch anything. Thick rubber bands are what they use, but I think that cable ties would do the same job quite well.
