Substance is great Jim, but there is nothing wrong with running a place that doesn't look like a garbage dump!

While I agree that Sport Chalet is very below standards as far as instuction, if you do your own research SC is a great place to pick up some gear. Just don't plan on much assistance from the staff. Despite the bad rep, I have come across some really good staff at the SC's down in San Diego over the years.
In the LA area, I prefer Reefseekers and Pacific Wilderness. Liburdi's down in Orange County seemed like a good shop, although I have only been there once.
