I ate mine, they were great. I had them for dinner on Sunday.
I will never eat scallops from right along our coast. I have a serious problem with the pollution from runoff. I know where there are abundant scallops locally, but they are far to cloose to Ballona storm drain (creek?) to even be considered for consumption.
The enviornment at Begg Rock is very different than here.
I also think there may be a difference in how these animals are consumed. With mussels, clams, and oysters, the entire animal is connsumed which includes the viscera. With scallops the visera is removed. And in fact I remove most of the viscera at the moment of harvest, and any remaining as soon as I reutrn to the surface.
I also have never eaten lobster tomallies, but I know people who do. They seem almost as disgustiong as sucking the juice out of fish eyes.
The warning for mussels seems to happen on an annual basis. It would be interesting to see some data for the testing of rock scallops.
