Such a BC might have assisted in some cases, but the man in question was conscious when he surfaced and got the attention of the crew. If he was unconscious by the time the boat got to him I'd say he probably suffered from an emoblism (entirely speculative). But as far as being "nicer to dive with" and the "only drawback is the difficulty to doff/don" is pretty subjective. I never dove a horse-collar BC, but I love my back-inflate - its very comfortable, stable and streamlined. Not saying you're wrong as such a BC may suit you very well, but such a blanket statement on such a subjective topic seems to be ... well, subjective :)
