Yes, the Department is fully aware of all the challenges facing the proper stewardship of this precious natural resource. The squid plan does look at restrictions in total catch, participants, restrictions as to where they can fish, considerations for the role of squid as an important prey base for many marine creatures (both feathered, haired, and scaled).
Management of the fishery is, however, more complicated that it might appear. The Legislature and the Fish and Game Commission set regulations, not the Department. In addition, the Code dictates that we foster economic development along with resource stewardship and recreational opportunities. It is often a challanging balancing act.
