Your problem is that other than the dive boat your are on, I doubt anybody is going to have a clue what anything means. It seems that aound here many boat operators think a dive flag is a slolum marker.
Myself, I like safety sausages, but that is for my type diving, where I may get far from the boat.
If you are on a dive boat, you can use which ever you want for any purpose. It's like hand signals. you just have to be sure the other person knows what your signal is supposed to mean before you go down.
