The weight of the unit, including lead, is
comparable to an AL80 open circuit rig.

To each their own. To me, in the right depth range,
the advantages of the Dolphin outweigh the expense
(Fill is $2 more because of the hot mix, sorb is
about $6, and fill the pony about every 10 dives
($3 per fill, so .30 per dive.). $8.30 is a drop
in the bucket compared to even the cost of driving
to Monterey and back (and I live coast) and
microscopic compared to boat expenses.

And the Dolphin, unmodified, is NOT for technical
dive profiles (though every rebreather dive is
a tech dive, even if only to 15'). It's for
reduced bubbles and warm gas.

Again, to each their own.
