As the OC Register article said, the Coast Guard has approached PADI about coming up with some new policies for dive boats.
Not wanting to see divers left out of the process for developing these policies, I contacted the CG and offered to represent the Greater LA Council of Divers on the committee. They expect to have their first meeting next week.
Basically, the Lt. Cmdr. I spoke to envisions a system of tags or wristbands that would be checked out and in with divers, in addition to a standardized roll call.
I'd really like to hear some thoughts on this, either publicly or privately at jondavies@earthlink.net. I will contact the dive boat operators/shops to make sure they have input and I encouraged the CG to get the other teaching agencies involved as well.
I'll report back with whatever the committee is coming up with.
