"HE REACHED THE SURFACE" That is the idea. Doing an emergency ascent from 100 feet with no air, unless you are a professional free diver YOU WILL NOT MAKE IT! I would rather have a bottle of spare air than a dead octupus or a buddy who is taking pictures or swimming far away from me. I ran out of air at eighty feet on my fifth dive after I graduated from my scuba class, my buddy was busy following a Barracuda probably 14 feet from me. When I reached him to get his octupus I was almost passing out. If I had spare air I would just try to get out of there, instead of trying to get close to my buddy.
