I also think that they were probably not worried about the ones back in cracks (they take to much time and effort) or ones that were on the small side since it sounds like they were getting a flat fee for each ab. I'll bet they found one of those areas that had a decent population no more that 400 feet square (because that is about the length of the hooka line)and went for it. Being totally paranoid, I'll bet they got all those abs in one spot and didn't waste no time. I also can bet they popped many abs in the past, probably legally sport diving, and are no amatures. So no, there were not to many "cut" abs,
because among seasoned ab divers you would get laughed at by your buddies if you cut an ab, so it becomes second nature not to have this novice problem.
All of this of course is just my speculation.
