I think you're still missing a key point. And that is that there are TWO wholly different things going on here. The fact they're happening at relatively the same time clouds things.

Dan's actions had nothing to do with the DMs not accounting for him at roll call. The DMs roll-call screwup had nothing to do with Dan being nowehere near the boat.

They're really two wholly different problems that happened at the same time. When you start trying to tie them together, all hell breaks loose, because the actions themselves are independent of each other.

Here's one thing to ask yourself: If the DMs had done the roll call perfectly at the rigs and had discovered Dan missing at that point, (1) what would have been different, and (2) how would this have changed our perceptions about the incident?
