You can get some info at California Dive Boat page and try to find a single day trips to Catalina. Hurry, they will fill up. The diving at Catalina tends to be very easy. I dunno about an instructor, but talk to a DM on the boat and try to get a buddy that will do some practice with you. There is usually at least one experienced diver willing to give tours.
