Yes, if Dan had stayed on the dock, the DM wouldn't have had the chance to screw up. But that shouldn't matter because the DM SHOULDN'T SCREW UP. Like I said, even if Dan TRIED to get left behind, he wouldn't have if the DM was on the ball. Dan's actions are immaterial because it's the DM's responsibility to make sure everyone's accounted for -- whether they deserve to be there or not.
If you can't follow that simple logic, then further discussion is pointless.
