Guys,
I have sent a picture of the "skeleton" that I found on one of the dives on San Clemente to a marine biology expert at UCLA. His diagnostic is indicated below. Apparently it was not a sea lion, but a shark...

Looks to me as though the skeleton being held is that of a fairly large shark (>6 ft or so), but I wouldn't be able to get it down to species without a closer look. The thing at the top is a chondrocranium - the cartilage that surrounds the brain - and the rest is a partial vertebral
column.
