If you have only dove in the tropics and want to dive in California, then the best time to do it is AFTER you are retrained in cold water.
A buddy of mine is a seasoned instructor in california. We do about 100 dives a year off my boat. When I mentioned my brother wanting to dive with us he strongly advised me against it.
This same instructor has been holding free clinics on his own time on how to dive this area if that tells you anything.
There are a lot of accidents in these waters. Many by "vacation divers".
Seek local training first!...at least cold water training.
