Question about Giant Black Sea Bass

I had always thought that BSB could be encountered in shallow waters near the coast during spawning season, roughly from May - Sept. My understanding was they pretty much disappeared from these sites over the winter months. However, I spotted one yesterday in La Jolla at 30'. So, is a mid-December sighting unusual? Anyone have any thoughts on this?
