Well, after scrolling down on the DFG's website intiially, there is a $96.50 fee for a commercial fishing license...but I finally scrolled down far enough to see that they have "limited" permits for "Lobster Operator Permit". I called and spoke with a Lai in Sacramento to get the scoop since I am not into the commercial thing and as previously stated am not up to speed.

She said the DFG does not issue any lobster operator permits anymore, and upon my query she said the $269 fee posted is to renew it, not to buy new one. She said the only way one can get a lobster operator permit is to buy it from one who has it providing they have the type that is transferable.

I asked her what happens to a license that is not renewed, does the DFG then put it up for sale? No again I was told.

She agreed that essentially a seller can charge whatever they can to sell their existing transferable permit. If one does not renew, then via attrition the number of lobster operator permits can dwindle......I know the otters will be pleased with that decision!
