The only thing I could add to all the great advice already given would be to get a pair of long freediving fins and a freediving suit. The fins, at least, made all the difference in the world for me. Get the full foot type and wear a 5 mm neoprene sock underneath. There's got to be a store down by you somewhere that sells all the freediving stuff.
The snorkel too is important. I use just a plain J style one with no valves or gizmos. All the fancy scuba ones do is just get in the way and create drag.
