My long-time understanding is that YES, they will develop a "memory" but that this can be avoided by occasionally completely discharging the batteries before recharging. The key phase being "occasionally". As for discharging - couldn't you just keep manually activating the flash until the batteries are fully discharged? If you don't want to lose any friends - keep the flash pointed away from everyone. The process can't take more than a few minutes.
