I went to the college of Oceaneering in Wilmington on a 'field trip' once and some of the comnmercial diving students were female - about half in fact and their web site shows a woman diver geared up for what looks like a commercial dive - horse collar and helmet etc. the following bio is for the vice pres. of that school:

Ella Jean Morgan, Vice President, Academics
Ella Jean has a B.S. in Biology from California State at Los Angeles and a M.A. in Occupational Studies from California State University at Long Beach. Ella Jean has more than 20 years of diving experience in various countries and has expertise in research diving and underwater photography. She is co-author of the book "When Women Dive," and numerous magazine and journal articles. Ella Jean's background includes experience as an administrator for the USC School of Medicine and in operating her own business.
