IP addresses aren't necessarily checked going outbound. So, with
(in)appropriate software, it's possible to send a packet which
contains an IP address of, say 1.2.3.4, from a computer with an IP
address of 5.6.7.8. If the packet were one that would cause a post
to happen, that post would appear on the board, and the board
would log 1.2.3.4. The board's response would get lost but that
wouldn't matter - the socket puppet post would happen.

I've suspected for some time that one or more folks on this board
have been doing this.

I'd be glad to chat with you offline about ways to detect and
prevent this.
