When I went to school at the Bodega Marine Lab, one of the local ladies was the cook. She was this very nice grandmotherly
type that could cook salmon like you wouldn't believe....
She told the story of her first trip out with the local Salmon fleet. These were all people that knew each other well. A small
community of fishers. She was a sweet lady and I bet she was well liked by her community.
In a much younger day, it was her first time out, she hooked up on a nice sized King Salmon and was lost to the world in an
epic battle, the ancient fight of woman against nature for her family's dinner. Also an old manly battle, mano e mano over
who gets bragging rights as the toughest at the end of the contest.
Lost in the excitement she didn't notice was that another boat had pulled up about 40 feet away and was giving the blow by
blow report of the struggle, over channel 16 for the rest of the fleet to enjoy. It was a popular broadcast, remembered for
many years.
Enjoy, seahunt
