I am giving this example second hand from a Coast Guardsman...In court the plaintiff claims that shared expenses would mean that you went to the fuel dock and split the bill at the point of purchase, went shopping for supplies and split the bill at point of purchase, etc. If your passengers just kick in , say 50 bucks each and the defense can prove you received so much as a dime over the receipts for the trip....your a passenger for hire vessel. Guys, I know this splitting hairs but the guy that gets hurt and is going to sue you will do ( or I should say his attorney )anything to prove his case. Remember we live in Calif.
