I've dove spots in Big Sur off of the Cypress Sea, and when it's good it's really spectacular. The topography obviously varies considerably site:site, but you should have the opportunity to dive sites with far more dramatic relief than anything you'll see in the Bay. Of course, this is also extremely exposed coastline, and you also have the opportunity for considerable current, albeit with the likelihood of also having places to hide from it once you reach the bottom. Check out the link to trip reports to the Big Sur area as posted by members of the Bay Area Underwater Explorers. I've been happy with the Cypress Sea as a dive boat, and it has the advantage of having a fairly large fully-enclosed galley area, which is nice for the long travel times involved.
