LA JOLLA, Calif. -- A diver was spotted floating unconscious Wednesday evening in the waters off La Jolla Shores, NBC 7/39 reported.

Lifeguards said they were notified of the situation around 5:25 p.m. According to Lt. Greg Buchanan with San Diego lifeguards, a kayaker spotted the diver about 150 yards offshore. The kayaker's instructor attempted to make contact with the person in the water, but realized the person was not moving, Buchanan said.

A lifeguard on a jet ski was in the area and was alerted and the diver was retrieved from the water and brought to the shore. There medics performed CPR.

The victim was then transported to Scripps La Jolla, where he later died.

A dive team was sent into the ocean a short time later and searched the waters to see if there were any other divers in distress. That search was later called off after lifeguards determined the person was alone, Buchanan said. The victim's diving equipment was turned over to the police department. At the time the diver was found the air tank was empty, he said.
