I'm not some environmentalist who hates fishing and I and a lot of my buddies spearfish when we want some fresh fish. It just seems like a pretty pointless exercise to shoot all these fish with no intention of eating them yourself, then give them away.

I acknowledged where the fish went to in my original post. If the point of this competition was to help provide food for the hungry and homeless of Ventura county, there are plenty of ways to do that without eliminating such a large amount of our already scarce marine resources. The donate button on the VCRM's website would have been a good place to start.

Don't want to rant here. Just a local shore diver without much money myself who doesn't like seeing one his favorite spots get shot up for someone's idea of "sport."
