Jon,

Not a surprising find for the Malibu area as after Pearl Harbor, fighter aircraft - usually P-38s - out of Muroc (and other USAAF bases) used several of the abandon fishing barges offshore as convenient gunnery targets. With six .50 cals and one 20 mm, and a combined rounds-per-minute capability of something like 4,000, there are probably a lot of shell casings on the bottom off Malibu. The practice was halted after a couple of incidents – In one case some local boys rowed out to one of the barges to fish at the same time a couple of P-38s were practicing live ammo gunnery runs. One would-be fisherman was struck by a wood splinter and all the others requires a change of underwear. Being on the receiving end of a couple of strafing P-38s and living to tell about it is amazing. The other strafing incident resulted in a barge being cut adrift and going ashore, annoying the local residents.
