I've used my Jet fins, Cressi frogs, and Scubapro pocket fins in the Carribean. My favorite are the pocket fins, as they are light to pack and do a good job. Unfortunately I can't find the Veloce non-split fins anymore... bummer. I actually am able to take all my dive gear and a pair of trunks in my carry on (sans weights and tank of course). NO dealing with TSA and lost gear in baggage. The Veloce fins just fit into my carry on.

You can hit some powerful currents in the Gulf; if you fin regularly it should not be a problem. If you're not used to the heavier fins you should get them soon and do some pool time with some added drag to simulate the extra effort you may need.
