I'm in a bad mood so I'll say it. It is all about the almighty dollar. It is what the fishermen need, it is what the State of Calfiornia needs, and it is what DFG needs.
I don't hunt so I don't buy fishing licenses. I have a hard time contributing voluntarily to a State that protects the rights of fishermen over things like mating Gray Whales. I guess you could tell the fishing net people they can't net around whales, but they would probably just start black market whaling so the pesky creatures didn't intrude on their fishing areas. It would be nice if the fishermen would just not deploy their nets around whales out of courtesy. I'd throw quarters, dollars, on their decks! Offer to buy them beer, some gas, whatever. But, it isn't going to happen.
OK, got it out, now back to bahh humbug.
