I have encountered two of these Limaria sp. (Swimming file shells) recently. They may be Limaria hemphilli or Limaria pacifica

The first I saw on the front side of San Clemente Island, California near the Blockhouse on July 2, 2011.

I saw this one yesterday July 9, 2011 ay Cape Cortez on the back side of Santa Catalina Island, California.

I took this picture of Limaria pacifica (Swimming file shell) in Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, Mexico on June 14, 2008.

I have never seen these before in Southern California. The fact that I have two at different islands within just over a week may suggest there are more to be found this summer.
