WAYNE,

In the Pismo area it was the Otters.

The rest of the state ??? who knows?

At one time there were huge Pismo clam beds;

LA county, Trancas, Zuma, West Beach,Will Rogers etc
Orange County,Newport Beach, (especially 13th street) Shaw's cove, Main beach, Doheny, the Strand, etc
San Diego County? I am not familiar with the beds in that county, but I have been informed the only Pismo Calms remaining in California are at the entrance to Mission bay.

In Baja there are huge Pismo clam beds, from the border to around Santa Rosalia, however they are being harvested at a rapid rate and are sold commercially in road side stands.

Some day a Pismo Clam shell will become a rare collectable shell.......
