Some years ago when I was just an innocent neophyte diver, I used to lust for a large brass bell while petting the shop's pet mountain lion in Water-Gil Dive Shop on Lincoln Blvd close to what now is Marina del Rey. The owners of the shop - Bob and Trudy Lorenz, guided me - Bob brusquely and Trudy with sensitivity - from an eager snorkeler to a certified (and ultimately certifiable) scuba diver. I was entranced by that bell and can remember the name on it - CHIAPAS. Little did I know at the time, that that was one of the names carried by what would become one of my favorite wrecks, one that I would dive to hundreds of times (and still do), the wreck that is locally known as the Star of Scotland. |
