The information provided on shore diving at Catalina is all great, but as a likely one-time visitor I'd seriously suggest you go with a charter boat. Your variety of sites visited will obviously be considerably greater, and your food/transportation is all taken care of for a very reasonable cost. I like Casino Point well enough, but visiting multiple island sites in one day without the hassle of dealing with ferry and motel logistics just makes a lot more sense to me. Plus you've got some two day options for the weekend of 11/2-3 as well: check out the boats listed via the above link. And DEFINITELY go with a 7mm suit, hood, and gloves.
