My OW instructor kept moving my mask during the R&R drills at Isthmus Reef. He told me he just wanted to see if I would panic. :-)
I keep a spare mask in my drysuit pocket, but the only time it has been used was by a buddy who had a strap break and lost his mask at the surface. In over 1,000 dives, I've never had my mask off under water. I also don't need to worry about seals or sea lions. My snorkel never leaves my garage unless I'm going snorkelling.
