I agree that the while the prohibitive costs of the many classes and gear replacement would make most shy away from DIR, there are a few low cost improvements. Replacing the primary hose with a seven footer and placing a bungied necklace on the backup second stage could be done for just a few bucks and could be used without buying a new valve or doubles. This could easily be taught in OW1. If more divers were using any of the DIR gear configuration the manufacturers might release their own versions of backplates, harnesses, wings, etc. Of course, this would conflict with the DIR's all or nothing attitude, but I think the message would be easier to spread if it could be done in OW1 and economically.
