I was just watching some episodes of the old TV show with the family the other night. He never used a BC and when he was in trouble he dropped his lead and/or fired off a CO2 filled "Rescue Pack" to do emergency ascents.
I dive today because I watched the TV series Sea Hunt as a kid so many years ago. Nelson was the perfect diver and did not need a BC. He used crappy fins and proper weighting to dive to various depths on different missions.
I must admit I like to be able to hover at various depths and love wearing a modern BC.
