Rising cost of gear

My Christmas wish is that all quality dive shops prosper in the 21st Century, but does their survival require and justify a 100% markup on everything from booties to BC's? Back in the "good old days", prices were low enough that markup wasn't an issue. As the cost of gear bar rises, is this keeping potential divers away from our beloved sport? If so, what's the solution?
