Wayne;

As for streamlining the wrist, the only time this is an issue for me is when I'm bug hunting. In that case, I put both gauges on the same wrist and have the other hand clean for reaching into holes. At no time do I put anything in a console on the presumption I won't use it. If there is a chance the gear is going to be used, it's stowed so I can use it efficiently. If there's no chance of it being used, it stays home.

You're right about the proliferation of teaching students to use a console. All the dive mags have people with these enourous contraptions hanging off their rigs. Ridiculous! As a result, new divers find the compass awkward to use and often forget they have them since they don't function well in the console anyway. Small wonder on any weekend at the islands you see people on long surface swims back to the boat. Consoles are right up there with snorkels.
