It uses a Spencer-Haldane algorithm on the Navy tables (1994 vintage). I think i see a way to do it, but IMO, it could be described as highly intuitive. I feel that you are partially on the mark, but now i am getting the bug to try it out, just for the challenge. Perhaps, the DIR folks may come close to the computer values through experience (which leads to intuition) the same way that the rest of us gradually end up memorizing the NAUI and/or Navy tables, just through sheer number of days diving, and glancing down at the info provided by our computers. (My Prodigy flat out gives me a readout of the USN tables....AWWW SHIT! gotta go, thunder and lightning are not good for computers on internet connections! bye!
