I don't follow your logic. Breathing deep or shallow, excess air pressure in the lungs will escape through your throat (airway) as long as it is open. It's when you close it that the pressure can build on ascent or (presumably) in a large swell. NAUI's slow deep breath advice avoids hypercapnia (excess CO2 build up) and provides better breathing gas utilization (less gas wasted in "dead air space".) This doesn't conflict with the "keep the airway open" (don't hold your breath) rule.
