I worked at Marina Dive and Sport at 22nd Street Landing for a lot of years. We had several indy instructors there, including Ron Tirado, Mike Stephenson, Wayne Darois and John Roodenberg. Not once, in any of the classes I assisted and/or witnessed, did the instructor recommend any specific gear. Even when I was certified at Sports Chalet in Huntington Beach, Rich Zielinski refused to recommend gear until a student was certified. Even then he told us to try different rental gear until we found something we liked. I know there are instructors out there on a sales commision, but I've been fortunate not to meet them.
