Frank, the crotch strap is vital for a diver to keep adaquate trim. It holds the unit from sliding forward when they invert themselves head first into, rocks (for lobster), a wreck (for the gold), or even after a head first descent.
The crotch strap also keep the unit from going to far back. To gain proper trim, a diver can't have a scuba unit sliding around on their back, as our typical BCD does. The properly fitted harness (which I have found many do not know how to properly fit) and the properly adjusted crotch strap keeps the scuba unit in place. Regaining proper trim and bouyancy is a cinch after you change it. I can prove this to anyone willing to take the time (and an open mind is required).
