PADI discouraged from the start and NAUI discontinued harassment dives because of the possibility of accidents, which translated to company-speak means lawsuits. I'm sure it won't take DIR/GUE long to eliminate harrasment diving after the first lawsuit or two and their insurance company steps in.
As for the whole DIR thing, look at it this way, if it does catch on I'm sure PADI will be more than happy to offer it as a speciality course. I can visualize the "DIR Diver" patch now...
